NVidia and Asus announce slew of 3D PCs

NVidia and Asus have announced three new 3D PCs at Computex this week, with a gaming-ready laptop leading the 3D charge in Taipei.

Asus has unveiled the G51Jx-EE 3D gaming laptop, in addition to the 3D-ready Eee Top ET2400 and CD5390 tower PC.

“Asus has a strong track record of pioneering new categories of PCs, as we did with the netbook,” said Jerry Shen, CEO of ASUS.

“Now Asus is very bullish on developing the 3D PC category by shipping notebooks, desktops and an all-in-one PC equipped with NVidia 3D Vision. We believe that all entertainment-based PCs will become 3D capable within a few years.”

120Hz displays and built-in IR emitters

All three machines will ship with 120Hz displays and active shutter 3D glasses and discrete graphics processors from NVidia.

The gaming-branded G51Jx-EE is a meaty 3D-ready laptop with no need for an external IR emitter to work in tandem with the bundled 3D Vision active shutter glasses from NVidia.

If you are looking for a machine to run the latest 3D PC games and Blu-rays later in 2010, then this could be a serious contender.

Asus’ Eee Top ET2400 could prove to be a great all-in-one for the kitchen, study or even the bedroom, while the CD5390 tower is for the seriously hardcore gamer demographic, sporting an NVidia GeForce GTX 480 GPU and support for up to three 3D LCDs, for a truly wraparound 3D gaming experience.

MSI WindPad jumps aboard the tablet train

MSI has announced its entry into the burgeoning tablet PC market at this week’s Computex event in Taipei, with the launch of the new MSI WindPad.

MSI’s first device in the tablet category is the WindPad 100, which is a low-cost Intel Atom Z530-powered slate PC running Window 7.

The WindPad 100, aside from sounding like something developed and designed by Nick Parkes’ Wallace and Gromit, also features a 10-inch capacitive display touchscreen with 1024×600-resolution

MSI has also created its own Wind Touch UI layer for the device, although we expect most users will quickly revert to the familiarity of Windows 7.

Android WindPad also at Computex

The WindPad will also have two USB ports, a very hand HDMI output for hooking it up and outputting 720p video to your HD TV and an integrated webcam.

An MSI product manager informed Engadget that the Wind Pad 100 will arrive later in 2010 priced at around $499 in the US

Also on show at Computex was MSI’s WindPad 110, a 10-inch Tegra 2-powered Android tablet

MSI didn’t say anything much about the Android-powered WindPad 110 in its Computex press conference, but the NVidia Tegra 2-powered 10-inch tablet running Android 2.1 is on show on the company’s booth at the event. Engadget managed to get the first hands on with the new MSI Android WindPad 110

Sony launching 3D-ready Alpha cameras

NVidia has announced that Sony’s new Alpha series of compact cameras with interchangeable lenses will be compatible with its 3D image processing software.

Sony’s new Alpha snappers follow Fujifilm’s lead into the 3D arena for the amateur photographer, and will work in conjunction with with NVidia’s 3D Vision Photo Viewer.

Amateur 3D photography

While much of the hype around 3D has, to date, centred on high-profile movies such as Avatar and games such as the forthcoming Gran Turismo 5 for the PlayStation 3, it is clear that the amateur photography scene is also going to be an exciting area of growth for the 3D camera and imaging devices and software markets.

NVidia unveiled the latest Sony 3D news at its Computex press conference in Taipei this week.

Any pics shot with one of Sony’s new Alpha cameras will be able to be post-processed as 3D, using NVidia’s tech.

British-bought iPads are costliest in world

iPads cost more in Europe and the UK than elsewhere in the world, according to latest reports.

Prices in Britain and Europe are around around a quarter higher than in the United States, says a new study.

Australia’s CommSec iPad Index notes that there are savings to be made by Europeans traveling to Asia, the US or to Australia.

25 per cent costlier

Craig James, Chief Economist at the CommSec share trading division of Australia’s Commonwealth Bank said that: “In the UK, Germany, France and Italy an iPad costs 20-25 per cent more than in the U.S.

“The question is whether Apple has priced its product too high for the European market, or whether the UK pound and euro need to depreciate further to bring global pricing into line.”

Prices for the cheapest, WiFi-only 16GB iPad range from $499 in the US to the equivalent of $620 in Britain.

The top-end 64GB 3G iPad will set you back $829 in the United States, yet the equivalent of $1,010 in Blighty.

“The CommSec iPad and CommSec iPod indexes suggest the U.S. dollar needs to lift against major currencies, but more so against the Euro and pound sterling,” James added.

Asus Eee Pad runs Microsoft Windows 7

Asus has finally unveiled its Windows 7 Eee Pad tablet PC, featuring an Intel CULV processor and a 10-hour battery life.

It’s the first big news to come out of this year’s Computex show taking place in Taipei, Taiwan this week.

Asus’ 12-inch Eee Pad EP121 packs in Intel’s Core 2 Duo CULV processors, Windows 7, and the claimed 10-hour battery life.

Keyboard and dock add-on

Asus is also offering a dock and keyboard for Eee Pad consumers that might want to use the machine as a media tablet and a regular laptop for home and work use.

Asus’ Eee Pad will no doubt appeal to PC fans familiar with Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system. The machine will also be capable of Skype-ing with its integrated webcam and will feature at least USB port. Two connectivity features notably absent on Apple’s recently-launched iPad.

Asus’ 10-inch EP101TC will run Windows Embedded Compact 7. The range of Eee Pads will cost US consumers anything from $399 to $499 and they should be available early 2011. No word from Asus UK on UK launch plans as yet.
